Esdon Frost, South Africa

Esdon_FrostEsdon Frost was born in Kalk Bay, a seaside suburb of Cape Town, on Christmas Day 1926, was educated at the Diocesan College, (“Bishops”) and matriculated in 1944. He served in the SA Artillery in 1945, which he likes to think was effective, because the war was over within a few months. Esdon studied at the University of Cape Town where he graduated with a BA in Fine Art degree in 1949. He freelanced as a book illustrator before working full-time illustrating and designing books in the Cape Town branch of the London publishers, Longmans. He later worked for the film producer Francis Coley, making commercial and ‘cultural’ films. After a few years he began making his own films and the short film Notice to Quit! is from this period. He also worked as a correspondent for British and American TV companies, covering amongst other things the first heart transplant at Groote Schuur Hospital. His working life since has alternated between book designing and illustrating and filmmaking. Esdon has been living in England since 1986.

Esdon will take part in a discussion after the screening of his film Notice to Quit! on Sat 24 Oct.
